Sam Adams Brewery - Fun, Free, and Educational Dec 20, 2009
Now I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a beer fanatic or even a regular beer drinker, yet I was pleasantly surprised by my recent tour of the Sam Adams Brewery in Boston (Jamaica Plain to be exact).

I found it to be a fun and informative tour - the guides were very knowledgeable, the history of the company and the brewing process were clearly explained, and we even got to sample the ingredients. The tour was filled with unusual facts - like the Boston location is where the company creates the new products while the other locations are where the full production takes place.

The tour lasts about an hour and includes a sampling of four beers produced on-site, some of which are only available at that location or from select local restaurants and bars. And the gift store had a nice selection of items and the prices were reasonable. I purchased a ladies hoodie sweatshirt for $17.

The brewery is located outside of the city of Boston in Jamaica Plain (30 Germania St) but is readily accessible by public transportation (take the "T" to the Stony Brook station, short walk to the brewery with plenty of signs to follow). While the tour is free, a $2 donation to charity is requested but not required. No reservations are accepted, so try to arrive early. You will need to check-in at the desk and present your id as only those visitors 21 and over will be able to participate in the tasting (and you will be able to keep your tasting glass as a souvenir). Tours depart every 45 minutes or so. Hours are:

Mon: Closed

Tues to Thurs: 10AM to 3PM

Fri: 10AM - 5:30PM

Sat: 10AM - 3PM

Sun: Closed

Info on the tours is available on the Sam Adam's website (samueladams.com) but it's not easy to find. I found it on the "Contact Us" page, a link to which is located in the bottom left corner of the page when I last checked in Dec 2009. You can also call the brewery at 617-368-5080.

Not going to write much as previous reviews hit it on the nose. Great tour, easy to get to and a must while in the Boston area. Tour guide was cute too! :P

Hops is to beer as grapes are to wine Jul 14, 2008
Even if you are not an avid drinker of Samuel Adams beer, you can learn how to become a beer connoisseur by visiting the Samuel Adams Brewery. When I visited the brewery, immediately I became a subject of their research as they wanted visitor input of their experimental beer (no beer is brewed at this brewery, but it is the birthplace of every single beer created for the company). Once inside the brewery you get to actual taste and smell different hops and barleys and you get a quick lesson on how beer is brewed. Afterwards, you go into the tasting room and the brewery gives you a free Samuel Adams glass cup as a souvenir and you get to taste Samuel Adam's lager beer as well as whatever beer happens to be their seasonal beer (all this beer I am talking about was served free of charge).
