Rijsttafel in Amsterdam Jun 28, 2003
Sama Sebo is supposedly the oldest Indonesian Restaurant in Amsterdam, and certainly one of the best. It is renowned for the 'Rijsttafel' or Rice Table in English. The Rijsttafel is a specialty of 23 small dishes of Indonesian food, expertly prepared and elegantly served at your table. It allows you to try a wide variety of Indonesian specialties all at once. The Rijsttafel is reasonably priced too, at 27.50 euros per person. It is perfect with ice cold beer -- and lots of beer for the hotter dishes!

The food is served pretty much all at once. They do put the dishes on warming trays with little candles below to keep it warm as you enjoy the flavors. The tastes are varied -- some hot, some sweet, some salty. There are satays, various meats, vegetables, soup and two kinds of rice. I particularly liked the Nasi Goreng -- Indonesian fried rice, and some of spicy meat dishes.

Go when you are hungry, as there is a lot of food and you will want to sample everything.
