If ever there were a lesson in taking what one reads on internet reviews with a large pinch of salt then this was it. Following Chokk's glowing report we strolled in here expecting 'great ambiance' and 'great beer'. But this is surely the bleakest bar in the wonderful town of Mechelen - despite its prime location and charming exterior. It says something when one of the other customers is in messy floods of tears. A place of arguments. A place of unblinking stares from solitary threatening strangers. A place of unplayed boardgames. A place to be avoided.
Chokk says:
I still find that this is a charming place if you are looking for the genuine old inheritance of the city. Mechelen has over the last 50 years been a working class centre and this is the only bar that has that genuine feel too. The city has changed the last 15 years dramatically to the better and so have the bars, but this one had remained true to its inheritance.

There are 100s of polished bars around the square that are far from genuine but more "touristic". I like those places too, but sometime it is nice to smell and feel the authenticity of the place. To me it is the same if I go in a harbour area then I also expect some roughness.

I am sorry if I didn’t make it clear enough for you that is one of the few places in the city centre where there is a rough feel to it; it is not the prime of Mechelen that comes here, but the guy without a work and sometimes also the rif-raf.

It is the only genuine bar in the city centre; it has fair prices, good beers and if you like I enjoy all kind of life; it offers a lot.

There are loads of charming places at the square that would fit a more polished wishes; I hope you found some of those too in Mechelen which is one of my favourite places in Belgium.

Salvator – the biggest carillon of St Rumoldus' Cathedral Apr 19, 2009
This old bar is situated on the town square of Mechelen and just next to the impressive but unfinished St Rumoldus' Cathedral, which is a witness of the Mechelen's proud past.

The Cathedral still dominates the skyline and the cathedral houses two carillons. The oldest one was put together in the beginning of the sixteenth century. People used to give names to the clocks. The biggest one is called Salvator, was found for the first time in 1498 and weighs about 8150kg(!).

The new carrillion was constructed around 1980. Almost all of the world's best carrillioneurs played on these famous carillions. Thus it is no coincidence that the Mechelen Jef Denyn Carillon School is the oldest in the world.

This bar is a genuine Mechelen bar which has great ambiance and is a place where you don’t want to go home from. Besides being genuine they also serve one of the best beers in the world the Gouden Carolus Triple. Great bar and I will definitely come back.
The best beer in the world
