Salvador is the capital of the northeastern state of Bahia and it's the third largest city in Brazil. The city sits on a penisula between the Todos os Santos Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It is generally divided into two parts: Cidade Baixa (lower city) and Cidade Alta (upper city), which is where the historic city center of Pelourinho is located. An art deco elevator called Elevador Lacerda connects the two parts of the city.
Salvador is the center of Afro-Brazilian culture. It's known for samba, capoeira, and candomble. Vistors can attend ceremonies and performances and take drumming, dancing and capoeira lessons. Salvador's carnaval is the world's largest street festival and you will often find groups of samba reggae drummers practicing for it year-round. The numerous historical churches are also popular attractions in Salvador and many visitors will spend time on the beaches on the bay and coast.

As I was waiting for a cab, it started pouring heavily. The cab driver
dropped me off at the medical center and I stepped in to a huge puddle
of water up to my knees. The drainage system there is not the greatest.

Oh!!! Salvador is SOOOO far away!! But guess what? We made it and things couldn´t have turned out better!!
Let me just tell you how everything fell into place . . . So, there we were dreading the journey because we had already gotten the impression that hitchhiking just didn´t work here in Brazil, and plus the distance we had to travel was so great . . . 1500 km from Rio de Janeiro!!!
We started out our journey as usual, getting as far away from the big city, in order to flag down a ride....
