Salun Gaya Rambut or “Stylo” Kuala Lumpur Reviews
Zen for Men – A shave in Kuala Lumpur at Salun Gaya Rambut (Stylo) Dec 26, 2013
According to the sign above the door, the Salun Gaya Rambut or “Stylo” is the oldest barber shop in Malaysia having traded since 1937. I only started visiting Stylo 4 years ago. I keep going back and recommend a shave here.
Getting a proper shave is not for everyone: Some won’t like the thought of a razor running close to their carotid artery. A shave takes time which many claim not to have.
Each barber has his own technique, although some elements are common to all shaves at Stylo: New blades are torn from their packages for each shave and liberal doses of a clove and orange scented spirit is applied to both the tools of the trade and the customer A first lather is applied and the barber goes to work with the blade. Each blade stroke is short and precise. A second lather is applied and any remaining whiskers are dispatched with long smooth strokes of the blade. There follows a sequence of cool cloths, spirituous fluids, rose scented lotions and sometimes a powdering with talcum. While this goes on the men chat and joke with each other in Tamil. From the moment the chair reclines I put myself into the barber’s hands and start to relax. There is no choice: Nothing good comes from a twitchy customer and a sharp blade. Sitting still I forget most of the things that seemed so wildly important when I walked in the door. By the time the last cool towel is run across my face it feels as if a weight has been lifted from my chest. I smile for no reason other than being in a cheerful workplace and being refreshed for the day ahead. This is why you need a shave.
The Stylo is the sort of place our great grandfathers went to get a shave. If you are looking for shining tiles, wood panels and elegant fixtures then go to a mall. The shop is worn at the edges. The place functions rather than trying to say something. Four chairs, four barbers and a bench for three customers to wait. You get a haircut and a shave here. One protocol seems to be that you will be shaved by the barber whose turn it is next and it is bad form to ask for Raja just because he shaved you last time. If it is Kumar’s turn, then he will shave you.
The Stylo opens at 8.30 in the morning and is on the corner of Jalan Tun HS Lee and Jalan Tun Tan Cheeng Lock. If you are at the Kota Raya end of Pataling Street turn left and walk about 100 meters.
The cost is between $RM8 for a trim and RM15 for a full shave. Feel a million dollars for less than five.
