hidden relaxation in the desert! Mar 14, 2009
A crowded weekend hot spot for southern californians back in the 1950s, the salton sea has since lost its popularity. but being just a little bit less than a three hour drive from los angeles it's definitely still a great daytrip or miniature get away for locals from southern california and arizona alike.
with nothing but the sounds of lapping water and birds chirping around you it's a nice spot to kick back and relax for lunch, the day, overnight, or longer.
you can bring your fishing pole, catch your dinner and then throw it on one of the grills they provide over by their covered picnic tables. there's also plenty of space to park your camper and bust out your own grill if you're staying long term. also bird fanatics bring your binoculars as over 400 species have been spotted in the surrounding areas!
when headed down highway 111 there are plenty of stops for different 'beaches' along the way so don't feel compelled to stop at the first one because some of the ones further along the way are far less crowded and have better views. however all the fisherman seem to have crowded on the little dock area off the first stop...
it's quite the peaceful area and defintely worth a stop on your way to salvation mountain or wherever your journey is taking you!
