Salento is a quaint little town tucked away in the mountain of Quindío Department in Colombia. It can be easily accessed from the three nearest big cities, Bogota, Cali and Medellin, by a combination of big and mini buses. It’s a very popular destination among tourists because of the famous wax palm trees in nearby Cocora Valley. Wax palm or Palma de Cera is Colombia’s national tree that grows up to 60m tall making it world’s tallest palm tree.
Salento is also famous for its coffee plantations. Travelers organize tours to the coffee farms to learn about farming and processing coffee beans. The place is also popular for wildlife viewing. There are ample hotels, good restaurants and nightlife to entertain travelers without losing the colonial charm of the town. If you are lucky you will get invited to play a local game called Tejos while enjoying local beer.
