Sal Island Vacation Guide
Sal - stands for Salt in Portuguese - is an African Island on the Cape Verde Archipelago, about 650Km's(400miles) away from Senegal on the western coast of Africa.
This is one of the smallest Islands of Cape Verde, but with great touristic interest for the country, because of beaches, water sports activities (surf and diving) and increasing number of hotels!
Once a desert island, only in the 19th Century it started to have population with the salt mining exploration activity.
Today this salt activity is a memory of the past, with some touristic interest as you can float on the new lagoon at "Pedra de Lume"
Tourism is currently the more important and main activity in the Island

Amazing archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic, closer to Senegal than to Central America.

Mixture of everything (colonial Portugal, South America, Africa, the Caribbean), placed in what was once a 'green (verde) paradise'.
*
Of the ten islands, only one is still superbly green, the others resembling a lunar landscape.
*
Dark volcanic rocks, scarlet sands, golden beaches, dry winds, bearable heat, few tourists - a lovely place to see!
