Sakura Hotel Hatagaya Tokyo Reviews
Alright hotel, with a not so great location Apr 14, 2015
I dont wanna make this hotel look worse than it is.
The Hotel is just fine! When you enter the lobby, you feel like getting into a backpackers-hostel... but still it's a hotel with private rooms, and private baths.
I noticed it's a pro-muslim oriented hotel. They got a praying-room at one of the first floors.
The staff was very nice, and welcoming. Good spoken english!
You get 1 free card to open your hotelroom-door. If you lose it you gotta pay 2000 yen.. happened to me.
They have a bar in the lobby which is open til late at night.. They serve some beers, gingerbeers, and soft drinks for a fair price..
The room was VERY small, very DARK, absolutely no view outside, except a wall... well yes... I do mostly get shitty views, must be because i'm not a pretty girl...
The bathroom was TINY. But generally the room was ok for its price... even though i liked the "Shinjuku Hotel Apartments" much better..read my second review...
The Hatagaya neighbour is cute.. I really like the bakery very nearby to the hotel...between the hotel an the subway station. They had great french pastries, for a cheap price, and very pretty waitresses ;).
There are some convenient stores just next to the hotel...helpful as well. The neighbour is very quiet, surrounded by a tiny park, and narrow streets...it certainly doesn't feel like tokyo...
But the WORST thing about it, was the location...
It takes you 1 trainride to shinjuku station... the hatagaya station is on a new keno line... and no popular station is on that line... so WHEREEVER you wanna go by subway...expect at least 3 train rides... 3 different lines... it takes you forever to get to some specific locations. As mentioned at least 2 rides, mostly 3. Those longer rides will cost you LOTS of time, and LOTS of money.
That was the biggest negative part of the hotel, and i won't go back to that hotel again. The rates were very fair, cheap rooms, but that's it....
A taxi-drive at night from shinjuku area to hatagaya took me around 10 minutes and cost me 2200 yen. NOT THAT BAD...but it's only 2 subway-stations appart...
And of course, finding the hotel, as soon as you get out of the station, wasn't THAT easy, if you don't know the area or the streets. I was lucky that i watched the streets on google-street-view...

It's hard for me to rate this properly as I may have had an entirely different experience if my bathroom didn't smell like a rat's arse for 2 days. Actually it was a little worse than that, let's say the decomposing contents of a rat's arse. Graphic enough for you? Don't worry, I'm disgusting myself, too.
Basically this is a budget hotel so my expectations weren't high - and I don't mind budget as long as it's clean and friendly. The staff here were friendly enough, one guy in particular went out of his way to help me out with an adapter problem I had with my laptop. But the stench in the bathroom was more than I could endure. I suppose really, I should've complained then and there, but I know the only options would be to have someone come into my room and clean it or change rooms. And at 10 O'clock at night after a long flight I really just wanted to crash into bed, which thankfully, was pretty comfortable.
I walked down the road to a combini (convenience store) the next day and bought some air freshener/febreeze type stuff and that helped for about a half hour - but the smell was definitely coming from deep down in the drainpipes.
When I left (I only stayed for 2 nights) I politely let them know, and the response was 'yes sorry about that, it's an old hotel'. This wasn't a particularly unfriendly response, the guy was quite polite, it was more just a case of 'well, my hands are tied, you know... it's old so... it's gonna smell'. I actually admired his honesty! But surely there must be something they could do, we're not talking a little hint of a waft here we're talking raging pungent odour!
Anyway on a good note, the location is pretty good, only a few stops to shinjuku (where it's alll happening!) and the free breakfast is a bonus. It's only jam on toast, coffee and juice but when you're on a budget it's very welcome!
So all in all, because of the bathroom fiasco, I probably wouldn't recommend this place to a friend nor stay there again myself (I've stayed in better places in Tokyo before and would go back to one of those instead), however I don't want to completely condemn it as it had some good qualities. And, perhaps I was just unlucky with the stink room, perhaps all the others smell of roses and freshly roasted cocoa beans!!
Sorry Hatagaya, you're trying I know, but you havent quite made the team son!
