A lovely 'heritage' hotel Aug 26, 2010
The Sajjan Niwas hotel is what they call 'mock heritage'. It is a relatively new building, though it is made to look like an antique haveli. Kitsch? Sure, but it definitely adds to the atmosphere. It is wonderfully done, with decorated ceilings and beams, photos of (fake?) Maharajahs in the corridors and more ornaments on the outer walls than you can shake a stick at.
Because the hotel next door is a similar hotel, it really looks like these are a set of old buildings, despite being in the middle of a relatively modern residential area.
Our room was comfortable and came with the usual amenities: bathroom, A/C, coffee & tea making facilities, etcetera. An added bonus was the free Wi-Fi in the room, the first time I had free and actually working Wi-Fi in India.
The rooftop restaurant is also excellent, offering all the Indian favourites as well as some Western dishes. There is a nightly puppet show, but its performers will leave you alone if you're not interested in the show, and they won't come begging for tips afterwards (which I regard as a huge bonus in India).
One word of warning though: the beer is ridiculously expensive in this place.
The staff is very friendly as well. A nice change from the last few hotels we stayed at.
The hotel is situated in a quiet residential area, about 10 minutes from the city centre by tuk-tuk. While this may not seem convenient, bear in mind that Jaipur is a busy, noisy city, so staying away from the city centre will certainly benefit your night's rest.
