Crayfish Boil on Bourbon Street Nov 16, 2015
On a recent leisure trip to New Orleans, my wife and I were dead set to have our lunch of Craw Dads (aka Cray Fish or Craw Fish) and beer. Little did we know that they are not in season during autumn. Most places will still have menu items that feature them, but they are most likely thawed from frozen stock and are not in their pure state. I also found out that some of the restaurants import foreign Cray Fish from Asia in order to bridge the gap of the limited supply until they come back in season during the spring. That's when he happened by Channing Tatum's restaurant Saints and Sinners on Bourbon. Out front of a charming old French house, was a guy tending to an enormous post of boiled Craw Fish. We learned from him that Saints and Sinners buys shocked frozen fish meaning that when they are harvested, they are immediately frozen and kept for the off season. This preserves them to as close to a fresh state without actually being fresh. We were sold, considering that we didn't really have any other choice. For a very good price you can get a platter of a couple pounds of Cray Fish for sharing along with a couple boiled potatoes and a couple ears of corn. Coupled with cheap American light beer and you have the perfect fun lunch, especially if you are sitting outside and people watching on Bourbon Street in NOLA. Now, we didn't try anything else on the menu, but the service was prompt and friendly and I had a good time peeling Cray Fish until I got my fill so I suppose that means Saints and Sinners accomplished their mission. I would venture back there again, but probably to do exactly to do exactly the same thing!
