Once know as "Mediolanum Santonum", the largest city in western Gallia (at the same level with Lyon), Saintes has slowly fallen asleep and is now a smaller city that it once was.

The memories of the giant it was once still remain, the most of impressive of which being a roman amphitheatre and a triumphal arch.

Other major pieces of architecture include the St-Pierre Cathedral (which had to be finished with a dome instead of an arrow), the St-Eutrope Church, the Abbaye-aux-Dames ("Ladies Church")and the town hall.

The general architecture of the city is lovely, all made with a sort of white stone characteristic of this area.

Around the rue Alsace Lorraine, you'll find a pedestrian district with many nice shops.
