Tucked away in the Caribbean Sea is a little gem known as St. Thomas. The island is located in the United States Virgin Islands. Whether you arrive by air on the island's western end or by one of the many cruise ships that arrive daily in Charlotte Amalie, you are bound to be mesmerized by the beautiful green hills and the sparkling blue water. This gorgeous scenery provides the perfect backdrop for any vacation.
One of the main attractions on the island is Fort Christian, which was built by the Danish in the 1600’s. Today, it is the oldest standing edifice in the USVI. The building has served many purposes over the years. It has been a town center, a house for the local government, a jail and is currently being used as a museum. Another interesting place to check out is Blackbeard’s Castle Tower where you will find remnants from the pirate era including cannons and statues. Pirates used St. Thomas as a base from which to raid merchant ships from every nation. This colorful heritage is reflected in the shops and other attractions on the island. The island is a great place for people who like to take it easy and relax on the white sand beaches. However, it is also a perfect place for the adventurous type. St. Thomas is perfect for snorkeling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, and hiking. Many soon to be newlyweds choose the beautiful tropical beaches for destination weddings. St. Thomas is also one of the most popular sailing desinations in the world.

We landed, debarked and collected our baggage uneventfully. I called my sister Laura to let her know we arrived, she works at The Frenchmans Reef Marriot as an events coordinator. She left work to come meet us and lead us back to her hotel. I had reserved a Jeep Liberty for the week from Discount Car Rental, and I called them next to come pick us up. We only waited about 15 minutes, before they both arrived. Laura followed us back to the rental place, ...

Land! I was up on deck to spot the first sight of the Virgin Islands at 8:30 a.m. Off to starboard--Savana Island perhaps. Whatever it was, it was shrouded in mist. I hopped this did not bode ill for weather this day. Soon, I sighted the western tip of St. Thomas to port.
Carnival Glory slid gently up to the wharf. Arriving in the U.S. Virgin Islands, we had to clear U.S. Customs first. There was a long line for processing, but soon we were on the dock. We had agin booked a Carni...

Ah, the US Virgin Islands, my favorite tropical escape. This is my second visit to the spectacular island of St. Thomas. The last time we visited we took the historic island tour (which was fantastic!) so we didn't feel guilty about hopping on a water taxi headed for St. John. St. John is only 12 miles away and is a 30-minute boat ride away.
A vast majority of the island is protected by the National Park service so massive resorts and tourist traps have not tainted the landscape. Our first s...

After my historical walking tour, I met up with Susan, Drew and Julia. It was now about 1:30 p.m. and time to return to the port area from Charlotte Amalie. The taxi ride back took us by various interesting sights including the court complex, an island Wendy's, and a housing block.
Havensight Mall is a shopping area fashioned from former dockside warehouses. Taxis drop you off here and you must walk through the shops to return to the pier and the ship. Before g...
