Castle In the Sea Apr 18, 2011
Saint Michael's Mount, the somewhat less well-known sister site of Normandy's Mont Saint-Michael, is a worthwhile day trip for anyone spending time in Cornwall. Located a few hundred yards off the coast of the town of Marazion, Saint Michael's Mount is easily reached via 15 minute bus ride or 60 minute walk along the beach from Penzance.

Plan your visit around the tides, as Saint Michael's Mount is best reached by a foot bridge which appears only at low tide. If you feel compelled, however, to go at high tide, a boat launch provides return service for 3 pounds each way.

Once on the island, ascend the steep "pilgrim's staircase" to the ancient castle/fortress/cathedral on the mount. I won't inflict a string of adjectives on the viewer, but suffice it to say that the castle interior and views of the ocean and surrounding countryside are exactly what one would expect given its picturesque location and history.

Although the nearby village of Marazion is a bit touristy (and some would say the castle itself falls victim by association), the truth of the matter is that Saint Michael's Mount is a perfect side excursion for anyone interested in beautiful ocean views, well-preserved historic buildings, and delicious Cornish cream ice cream (at the gift shop - buy two cones!).

Interesting Island May 04, 2011
St Michael's Mount is a little island off the shore of Marazion, you can park your car (if that's how you've travelled) and jump on a boat which are fairly frequent but finish at either 5pm or 5.30pm, it's £1.50 a ride, otherwise you can wait until the tide is low and walk across.

The island has an interesting history of trading, religion (the island is linked to a similar one in Normandy Mont Saint-Michel)and war and you are able to walk around the castle, 18th century village and gardens for fees ranging from £3.50-£8.75 (please note, they aren't open on saturdays!)

If history isn't your bag then just getting to the island itself is an experience that I think is worth it (particularly on foot), you could just go the castle gardens or just look around the island - as people do indeed live there!!

If you've had enough of the Island I suggest heading back to Marazion, they have a great local pub that does amazing food, opposite the post office and next to the town hall, but I can't remember what its called!!!
