St Mang’s church May 25, 2017
St Mang's is the main Protestant (Lutheran) church of Kempten, which at one time (1525 to 1802) was divided into two parts: a Protestant Reichsstadt (free imperial city) and a Catholic Fürststift (attached to the Benedictine abbey). It dates originally from 1426 and has undergone several major renovations over the years, taking it from gothic to rococo to neo-gothic.

The church is for the most part simple and quite elegant, but with some colourful stained glass windows at the choir end and a scattering of Rococo cherubs looking down from ceiling height. I liked the delicately painted leaves ornamenting the ceiling of the choir. The wooden altar piece dates from 1896 and the pulpit from 1608.

Thanks Holger - I really liked this church which seemed so peaceful compared to the heat and noise of the motorbikes outside - although apparently later Anne Marie saw one of the bikes IN the church (as part of a service)

Saint Mang Church Apr 04, 2017
Sankt Mang is an Evangelical-Lutheran church that was built in a Gothic style dating back to the early 15th century over an existing Roman style church. The lower part of the church spire that extends up to the clock is from the original period, the rest was rebuilt in 1767 in a Rocco style and again a century later in a Neo-Gothic style. The church was named after Saint Magnus of Füssen a local hermit priest who lived around the 8th century. The high altar was made in 1893 and awarded a gold medal at the World Exposition in Chicago, it has been a feature of the church since 1906.
