Saint Charles Overview

St. Charles is the county seat for St. Charles County and was founded in 1769.Origially named Les Petites Cotes, ("The Little Hills"), St. Charles has been a welcoming site across the Missouri River from St. Louis County for years. The Lewis & Clark Expedition set out from St. Charles in 1804; the city now houses an excellent museum at the Lewis & Clark Boat House.
Along the Historic Main Street a visitor will find 10+ blocks of buildings dating back 200 years. Shops and restaurants are nestled side by side along the cobblestone street. The Festival of the Little Hills held in August and the Christmas Traditions during December are just two of the many reasons to enjoy this shopping and dining destination.
The home to Lindenwood University, St. Charles is a safe, family friendly location. If history is not your choice, there are many modern conveniences including shopping areas, casinos, BassPro Shop, etc. Hotels, motels and B&B's abound here and all offer excellent opportunities for accommodations.
All in all, St. Charles is a family friendly city nestled along the banks of history.
