Built by the French colonists during the nineteenth century, Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica stands proudly in Ho Chi Minh City and is situated very near to the central post office of the city. I thought the interior was nice enough; not as nice as the one in Paris but still nicely constructed! However, the way it was built was rather impressive - all of the building materials were imported from France and the red bricks from Marseille which cover the façade still look as magnificent as they would have done all those years ago. Maybe it was just the fact that I was in this part of the world, but the basilica seemed rather out of place and perhaps was too great a reflection of imperialism. Still it is very nicely constructed and a great reminder of the city and country’s past. Worth a quick look for sure.

very beautiful cathedral in Saigon. there was no entrance fee when we were there but it closes in the afternoon. to note was that in 2005 the statue of virgin mary in front of the cathedral was reported to have shed tears down her right cheek, much to the disbelief of the authorities, and a failure to disperse the crowd flocking to the site for days. to note too was that all the original materials used to build the cathedral was imported from france initially. there were a few tourists when we were there but not as much as what you would expect to see in Siem Reap.
