Sai Kaew Villa Koh Samed Reviews
Budget accomodation only meters away from the beach! Oct 02, 2011
Sai Kaew Villa is located on Koh Samed in Thailand, about 2hrs drive to the south-east of Bangkok, and 30minutes ferry ride (100baht return) from Rayong. You can also get a speedboat for 200baht per person each way, and the boat will drop you off on the beach right outside the villa. They will also organise a speed boat to take you back to Rayong upon your departure, but they need at least an hours notice. The villa is very close to all shops, night life, restauarants, and tour centres - pretty much in the centre of it all!
I have stayed here on numerous occassions with friends when in need of a cheap weekend away from Bangkok. We stay in the 'Deluxe Rooms', yet there is nothing deluxe about them. Fan only, with a double bed and small bathroom. Bed is not very comfy, and the blankets they use are rough and look rather old. There is a wooden day bed in the room also, and a desk with a mirror. The rooms get very hot at night, and a fan doesnt really help too much - if you want air con you will pay more for it. Our basic 'deluxe' room starts at 500baht a night, and sleeps 2 people. A real bargain if you're happy with basic ammenities. At least the bathroom has a flushing toilet, and good water pressure, but don't expect it to be hot, or even warm. I wasn't too fussed as its always so hot and I love cooling off in cold water. If you're not careful, water can end up all over the bathroom from a quick shower.
Sai Kaew Villa also has a restaurant on the beach, which is where we always eat breakfast when staying there. The restaurant has a wide selection of Western, European and Thai meals, all of good quality and taste. It does take a little while to get the servers attention once you sit down, and then even more time to order. Once you have ordered though, the food comes pretty quickly. I suggest you try their 'coconut shakes' which are amazing on a hot day! They also have tea and coffee, and will do take-away.
As the rooms are only meters away from the beach and main strip of restaurants and clubs, the noise can get quite loud at night - easy solution: turn the fan on high and you wont be able to hear anything else.
I was very disappointed with the honesty of the staff on one visit - I left a gold necklace in the bathroom. We left the room, went to the desk to checkout, remembered the necklace, went back to retrieve it, and it was gone. There was already a cleaning lady in the room, who denied seeing it and taking it. My fault entirely, but it was taken by the staff so quickly. Staff at the reception desk are friendly, but dont really go out of their way to help you.
I do not plan to stay here again, but if you need budget accomodation and wont be spending much time in the rooms, go for it!
