Sadao (Thai: สะเดา) is a small town and district (Amphoe) on the border of Malaysia in the Songkhla Province, southern Thailand.
Historically Sadao is part of Kedah in the district of Changlun, means 'the falling of an elephant' in Thai. The district were once a part of Changlun, and under the overlordship of Malay Sultanate of Kedah, in Thai known as Saiburi. Sadao is also known as Sendawa in Malay.
When the United Kingdom and Siam (Thailand) signed the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909, the area of Changlun were divided into two parts, which is:
the main border town of Changlun in the district of Kubang Pasu, State Kedah of Malaysia;
the other part of Changlun remained with Siam, i.e. tambon Sadao.
The tambon Sadao together with the former minor district (King Amphoe) Prik was then made the district Sadao.
