Hiking Sabino Canyon Trail to the Dam Aug 12, 2010
A day's outdoor activity in Tucson can include an hour hike to Sabino canyon Dam from the Visitor's center. Mark (amaretto), Desire (my daughter) and I (Africancrab) took to hiking on Thursday evening after a hot day in Tucson. At quarter to 5:00 pm, it was still 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but we decided nonetheless we needed to go hiking. The Sabino Dam lies East of Sabino Canyon Visitor Center. To get there, take the paved road and walk toward Bear Canyon or onto the lower Sabino Canyon dam, or better yet take Bear Canyon Tram to stop #2. We did neither of the above recommended, we took an unmarked trail to the top of an old water house, then down to the base, joining the Sabino dam trail just a few yards before the end of the trail. It was not exactly the best time to visit the dam, as we were bombarded with bugs and water flies. The views were incredible despite the heat. We saw 3 rattle snakes on the way back on the Sabino dam road.
