Dated, but in a nice setting Jan 02, 2012
I took a road trip from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and stayed in the Jr. Suite at this hotel. The room as spacious and provided a huge king size bed. That said, it was pretty dated. The TV was small for the distance from the bed, which made it a bit hard to watch. The balcony had plenty of room and provided a nice view over the forest area. The hotel is located a bit out from the town centre, but honestly, it is not the best town centre in Sabah. The food in the restaurant is decent, and there is a nice pool downstairs.

Sabah Hotel May 11, 2010
As Sandakan hotels go, this has to be the best. A Beautiful 4 star hotel with 116 elegant guestrooms and suites. My allocated room was very spacious and was very comfortable. The bed was large and was one of the most comfy beds I've ever slept in. The rooms are complemented by the tropical foliage which surrounds the hotel but my room view was not anything special. The hotel has many facilities a great little gift shop, fantastic pool and it also has its own Tourist tour Operator / organiser service. The hotel is clean, comfortable and singles, couples or family holiday share many of the benefits of the 4 star service which you expect with so many business and conferencing customers also using this hotel. There are a number of places to eat, each with their own flavour of Borneo as well as Western and Chinese tasting food. There is the Plantation Cafe which provides all day International and local cuisine. The Ming Restaurant is a Chinese specialist. There are also a couple of lounge areas. The lobby lounge provides a relaxing area whilst the Amadeus lounge is a music lounge. There is also a Gazebo Snack bar situated poolside. This hotel provided me with a comfortable location in which to reside during my visit to Sandakan, but its location is less than ideal. As i wanted to visit Sandakan most days and nights I found myself having to walk a mile along a less than ideal foot way down a hill, next to a busy dual carriageway. Failing this, I would have to get a taxi, which was not exactly expensive but it was money that i felt was unnecessary. There is no frequent public bus service, as you will find out in Sandakan, you have to try and jump on board the over crowded taxi mini buses which infrequently pass by. I can understand that a hotel of this nature needs to be located slightly away from the town centre but it is the access to the town which makes it a little less than ideal. Nevertheless, this hotel will provide many of the home comforts expected in the Western world in an area which many part are still predominantly 3 rd world.
