SUK11 My Old Friend Jun 23, 2011
OK. You have been to Bangkok before (or not) and you want something centrally located. Khao San Road is fun and all but not within walking distance of the trains. You want something that has other travelers or backpackers but not a loud wild party. You want a guesthouse and a private room or maybe your friends want a dorm. Suk11 has always served me well.

It is located about 5-6 minutes walk from the Nana sky train station and about a 12 minute walk from the Asok sky train station. There is also a subway station next to Asok. It is located in Soi 11(side street). Down the soi on the left side you will see a 711 shop. The alleyway behind it is where you will find Suk11. It is a big place and when you enter the front you will see a rustic looking front desk area. There is no air con outside of the rooms. There is a big table and benches in the lobby and a cooler with ice cold water for sale. Music is usually playing in the background and there are always a few travelers lounging around or going to and fro. The front desk folks change a lot but the owners have been the same since my first visit 6-7 years ago. The English level varies throughout the staff but the bosses are native level if it is serious enough.

There is no elevator and the rooms are all at least 2 flights up. Some 3-4. The long dim hallways all have that rustic wooden feel. There is a cool room with AC and cable TV available as well as a couple of computers available for rent. There are a couple of washing machines on the premises as well as a dryer. If the dryer isn't working I usually hang up my things in the laundry room that has a fast ceiling fan that helps dry things. There are many rooms down the long hallways. I have only used singles en suite, singles with shared bathrooms and doubles en suite. The shared bathrooms are usually pretty clean. I have never ran out of at least pretty warm water. There are many restrooms throughout the building and if one is busy you can easily find another. I have never waited more than a few minutes. There is a roof top for those so inclined to get sun with a shower up there. There are a few rooms that have the shower on the balcony. I actually love these rooms as I feel I am so far from home in these rooms.

The singles and doubles are sparse. There is a good AC and a lamp or two as well as a small desk. Two towels are usually provided and are adequate. Clean sheets are provided with your towel. A small soap bar also. This is basic but good accommodation for independent travelers.

The noise level can vary but I have never had a problem. Late returning revelers on occasion. It would be best to speak quietly as you can hear into the rooms from the hall but surprisingly most people are not too loud.

The location is great. The sky train/711/Q-Bar nightclub/Bed nightclub as well as several pubs/money changers/ and other hotels are on the popular Soi 11. It can be noisy outside during the day but.........

There are great food venders on Soi 11. Soi 11 has become a destination of its' own in Bangkok.

There are train and bus schedules available at the front desk as well as maps and in the morning there is free coffee, tea, fruit, bread and spreads. There are sooooooo many people coming through who have been where you are going. Oh, you can bring an extra padlock for your door. If there is space you can leave a bag here for a small fee. I usually pay between 500 to 700 baht for my singles but you have to check the website for the latest info. I have NEVER felt unsafe here. There are no guests allowed in the rooms. I have never had any problems with my belongings here. I have stayed almost every year in the past 6-7 years. These last few sentences are the main reasons I uses SUK11. Also, there are tailors and pharmacies and plenty of odds and ends around the Soi. Across the street is also a well stocked supermarket full of western amenities if you so desire, including deodorants and shaving needs as well as some of our favorite western snacks. There are always extra books lying around Suk11 to swap (plenty of novels).

And the manager Anil may look grumpy from lack of sleep, but he is a teddy bear!

Comfy little corner spot May 24, 2011
So when I was in Bangkok a couple of years ago, I happened upon this place by accident. It was fairly good priced for what you received--a clean, air conditioned room, shelves of books to exchange from, and a wonderful healthy breakfast that included breads of all sorts, unlimited coffee/tea and fresh fruit.

It's also very conveniently located near the skytrain, the malls, mini night markets filled with different kinds of food and other knick-knacks, as well some of the major, higher-end clubs around.

On the other hand, the hostel itself is definitely not a social atmosphere where you can easily meet other travelers; If you're looking for low-key, temporary sleeping quarters, this place may work out for you

Wooden Thai Guesthouse Jan 21, 2011
Surprisingly peaceful considering the chaos you'll notice in Bangkok.

Hidden somewhat in a lush greenery this simple old style guest house will surely satisfy any travelers expectations!

Price was quite cheap for being so "centrally" located, think I paid around 600THB/Night, breakfast included. (This during low season, I think in High season it costs a bit more)

Most amenities available like laundry, internet (WiFi 1st Floor Only), baggage storage and all rooms have air con. If understood correctly no TV in any of the rooms.

BEWARE: During my stay I noticed and was engaged in nightly combats against Cimicidae AKA bedbugs roaming around the room!

Definitely lost the "unknown" appeal, but moving towards a classic! Jun 26, 2011
Of all the places to stay in BKK, it's hard to find a nicer one that Suk11! I stay there every time I pass through; although, I must admit that being the type that likes to find places that aren't so well known, I feel a bit lazy just opting for Suk11 again at this point. Unless you specifically are looking for Khao San Road fun, Suk11 is the most unique and interesting place you'll find to stay in BKK. It's especially good if you're with people already, as it's not really the best place to meet new friends - most people there have already made friends with regulars or are there with their own friends and not looking to make new. It doesn't have the huge dormitory/let's all have a party flair of some places in BKK, but it's set up in such a cool artistic way that just finding your room feels like some kind of adventure ride in a theme park.

It's an Indiana Jones ride on acid...that you sleep in. If you haven't been there, and that doesn't make you wanna go....well, it's probably not right for you, and it's probably full already, so you might not be able to book a room anyway. :P

Suk11 Hostel Bangkok Mar 11, 2011
I found the Suk11 Hostel in Bangkok to be located in a safe area and within walking distance to the metro. I had quiet nights while staying there in 2008. I liked the prices and the area was very happening. The area, which is named Sukhumvit, is not tacky as the area known as KhaoSan Rd. You might not like Suk11 but I am sure you will like the area. Taxis are cheap so you can get anywhere with no problem. The metro is also close by.

We used to stay at SUK11 most times on arrival in BKK. Now - it has become so popular and full that the prices are creeping up and for about 25$ you can get a clean, air con room with undamaged plain light decor and crisp cotton sheets.

The guesthouse for backpackers has it's own character. Articles have been written about it in local and national papers and magazines. The corridors and end rooms have a rustic shack feel with plants and quirky tool adornments to keep you looking for things you haven't seen before as you tread carefully along the wooden plank gangways.

It is clean and has a modern, youthy, creative feel to it. It has a couple of computers tucked away for you to use the internet. The reception area has wooden decor and large tables to gather round and meet other English speaking travelers to swap stories or read the papers and random info they have gathered, including a book on volunteer work available to you.

The breakfast is help yourself (included in the room price) and water/pop/coffee/tea are all there ready for you to help yourself and put your money in the box(honesty box as with the internet).

A good experience and change from the usual hotel or guesthouse. But the prices are increasing so get in quick while they're still OK.

SUK11 is an experience not just a night in a guesthouse.
