SSR International Airport Mahebourg Reviews
SSR Airport Apr 16, 2015
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport was previously known as the Plaisance Airport. The airport is a hub to the country’s national airlines Air Mauritius. This year it won ‘the best African airport’ award. Even knowing that, I still think that it is one of the worst airports I have used. I used it four times. If you want to visit Mauritius, you will need to use this airport too.
It is a small airport, as the country is tiny and doesn’t really need a huge airport. Mauritius is located in the middle of nowhere so it is not a common connection flight place either.
The arrival is sort of a nightmare. The arrival hall is small and usually too many people have too squeeze inside. No air in the arrival terminal. The immigration is very slow. You need to wait for your luggage long time. Sometimes eternity. I heard many people complaining about their luggage being lost or devastated. There are only 2 carousels in the old terminal and sometimes the same carousel is dedicated to more than one flight.
There is free wifi though. Very useful when you have to wait for your bags.
Departure terminal is better. It looks huge and empty but after passing the check-in counters the way to the gate is easy and short. There is not enough place to sit though. The safty-check is a joke on this airport. My outfit had metal elements and the detector didn’t even react.
