S&R Membership Shopping Taguig Reviews
American warehouse membership shopping replicated in the Philippines Nov 16, 2012
S&R is a membership-shopping club patterned after the warehouse membership shopping chains popular in the United States. There are six stores in the Philippines, this review is for the original store located at Bonifacio Global City.
S&R's core concept is to deliver significant value to member-customers via an effective and efficient system which is anchored on aggressive buying, low-cost distribution and streamlined operations. There is an annual membership fee which costs P750 (under $20).
When they mean aggressive buying, they mean it with cheaper per unit prices (except that you have to buy 2-3 times more than normal quantity you purchase), twice a year four day sales (where you can hardly get parking unless you're first in line), and a range of items not normally found in Philippine stores and supermarkets.
When they say low cost distribution, it is because the goods go straight from the US or local distributions and into their warehouse, no more middlemen. They also stock their items in racks high above the shelves.
Finally, with streamlined operations means everything is done within the floor and with the least amount of sales persons assisting the patrons except those in the meat section.
It's an interesting place to go to because you will bump into the rich and famous happily doing their groceries and lining up just like their less famous contemporaries. And they don't seem to mind doing groceries on their own, except some movie stars and the like usually have a retinue of maids, drivers and bodyguards at their beck and call.
Food being sold is both from local producers and imported goods primarily from the US. They usually sell meat in packs of two kgs. (almost 5 lbs.) on the average, which is far more than what the average Filipino consumer will buy for a week's worth of groceries(since not all people's refrigerators are 20 cu. feet and above). Seeing items being sold by the bulk is the norm, not the exception.
An exciting time to visit S&R in Bonifacio Global City is during the holiday season that starts in November. By this time, the store will have promos of freshly cut douglas fir trees for Christmas trees, shipped from Oregon. They also have a food outlet that sells large pizzas, hotdog sandwiches, roast chicken, calzones and churros at a reasonable price. Plus they also have a car center which primarily sells tires and batteries, with free mounting and installation with check-ups in between the year.
If you are a long term expatriate assigned to the Philippines, this is the place to shop as you will feel like in any other US warehouse membership club. But if you are by yourself and find it difficult to carry the loads of groceries you've purchased, this may not be the store for you (except if you are there just to eat).
