The Rabbit Hutch Oct 12, 2012
My travel partner and I nicknamed this hotel "the rabbit hutch" because of the straw smell, the sitting/sleeping on the floor, and mostly because of the views we encountered from the owner as two females (no man with us) - he treated us a bit like we were helpless/needed to be watched/taught carefully. We didn't have a free breakfast as indicated in the other reviews... maybe they changed that between 2010 and 2012. When we went into the on-site restaurant for lunch one day, we were ignored and nobody served us even after 10 minutes, so we left.

You could purchase water and kirin beer from the front desk, which my travel partner did on a few occasions - to be met with comments that she shouldn't drink anymore, women shouldn't drink, maybe she shouldn't etc etc. It was frustrating for her to have those views pushed on us, and mostly because she was sober when purchasing the 1-2 beers - it wasn't as though she was making a scene because she was drunk.

I really did not like the traditional sleep-on-the-floor-mats style, I barely slept any of the nights there.

The owner was helpful at times, writing down addresses for us in Japanese and giving us advice with transport, but it just seemed like he didn't want us there or didn't like us, an unusual experience for Japan.

We had an ensuite bathroom, it was tiny and didn't feel particularly clean or comfortable, the toilet ran during the night which wasn't ideal. We both showered in the communal area - that was really nice, big, relaxing, I'd recommend using it even if you have ensuite.

The location overall was pretty good, it was right in the hub of shops and cobbled little streets full of vendors. The main buddhist temple is 5 minutes away, and very peaceful and relaxing to visit. Location is also close to Asakusa subway station - but be warned, there are hardly any lifts or elevators, so if you have a lot of luggage, be prepared to lug it up and down (literally) hundreds of stairs without help - nobody ever offered to help us. Also it can be confusing to find the airport platform, the locals are sort of aware of this but they're not great at explaining how to get there. If there is two of you I suggest that one you waits with the luggage, whilst the other finds the platform - then navigates back to you to get the luggage and then go to the platform together. Otherwise you'll be carting bags up and down hundreds of stairs looking for the elusive platform - it tires you out quickly, esp if you're rushing to get an international flight. Still, don't take a taxi, it will be over $100 to either airport and you'll sit in traffic. At least the subway is quick and cheap ($6 each if I remember correctly).

The subway is also really good/close for going to Ueno - which i highly recommend.

A wonderful ryokan in Asakusa, of old Tokyo! Jul 10, 2009
Ryokan Kamogawa is located ideally close in Asakusa's Senso-ji, Nakamise Street Market and Kaminari-mon.

Close to the Ginza Line and the Asakusa Line Stations, it is great for travelers and backpackers to experience traditional Japanese inn. It is also close to many traditional shops, restaurants, izakayas, the Sumida River Boat Terminal and accessible to other parts of Tokyo.

Clean, charming, and classically traditional, Ryokan Kamogawa offers a traditional Japanese inn while in central Tokyo.

The staff is nice, friendly, warm, and speaks English.

They offer different types of rooms (with or without an ensuite bathroom) that can accommodate from 2 to 6 people from 5800 to 8200yen (see website for detailed prices - prices are affordable to average for a ryokan). The rooms has tatami mats and futons are prepared for you to sleep on.

A Japanese bath on the 1st floor and a western shower on the 2nd floor is available for those in rooms with no ensuite bathrooms.

We booked a room with ensuite western bathroom for 7500yen per person. It had spacious tatami mats with a separate space for tea table, small fridge, and tv. The bathroom is small - slightly cramp, typical Japanese size, but it was adequate enough. They provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, as well.

Free computer w/ internet and LAN connection is available on the 1st floor where the tea room serving breakfast (western (free) or Japanese-style (1000yen) and Japanese dinner (4000yen) is also located.

Note: The front door and desk closes at 2330 - so if you plan to be out late, past 2330pm, let the front desk know and they will provide you with a key for the back door.

Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here. It is a lovely ryokan.

Affordable with superb service! Aug 19, 2009
Wonderful place. Definitely worth the stay.

Just beware of the curfew and plan your nights accordingly, so you don't get locked out after 11:30pm. (They are very punctual with time! We were late by 2 minutes one time and they had already locked the doors.) If you do plan on checking out the city, they do give you a key, but make sure you let them know ahead of time.

Free breakfast is delicious, and customer service is excellent. The rooms are a tad small, but still pretty comfortable and come with free green tea and basic bath toiletries, such as face towel, body towel, bathrobe (yukata), shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, and a razor.

There is a TV with plenty of Japanese stations to pass the time, as well.

If you dont have the time to visit an onsen or sento while in Japan, make sure to try out the Japanese-style family bathroom right in the ryokan. Any of the guests are welcome to try it out.

If you are looking to check out traditional Tokyo, the geisha district is right behind the hustle and bustle of Sensouji Temple and Nakamise Dori (which is only 2 minutes away). Ueno is also just one stop away.

If you would like to venture beyond this area, the Asakusa station is only a 5 minute walk away.

Next time I come to Japan, I will definitely stay here again.
