Rycroft Overview

Rycroft boasts less than 700 souls. It really is another small Northern or Western Albertan community so typical of the region.

It sits on the junction of Highway 49 (Spirit River Highway) and Highway 2 which bisects 49 North / South. It is 68 km. North of Grande Prairie and styles itself as "Hub of the Peace" i.e. Peace County which is named for the river of that name. Whilst the County is named for the river, the actual village itself is named for a man called R.H. Rycroft who was one of the original settlers. There were three settlers for whom the community could have been named so they put their surnames in a hat and drew to decide.

This is not the original site of the village but when the railway was driven through it missed the original settlement completely so the settlers re-located to be close to the tracks.

The major social event is the annual chuckwagon race held in early July and run by the local agricultural society.
