Ryad Mogador Hotel Marrakesh,Morocco.

The taxi ride from the airport took about 35 minutes to get to our Hotel, the Ryad Mogador in Marrakesh. No porters to carry or luggage to the front desk.

Standing outside the Hotel and observing the exterior, looks old and dirty, but then it’s dusty and windy in Marrakesh at least today it is. An old world charm about it, and tired looking, maybe in need of a paint job.

Had trouble checking in, they didn’t seem to know anything about my reservation, so I had to dig out my email copies of confirmation with reference numbers etc, the first time I’ve had to do this in a wee while I have to add. Anyway all sorted, again no porters to help with luggage, took myself up the lift to my room.

Room was small and cramped. Bed looked like it wasn’t made properly, and the cleanliness of the sheets looked doubtful, as with the pillowcases. Rang front desk to enquire when the room was last serviced, encountered language problem with service desk so I gave up. Bathroom was small and cramped but adequate. Towels looked unwashed and one was torn but smelt laundered. No face-cloths, and no toilet paper, rang front desk who sent someone up with two rolls and some more soap for the shower. The view looked out over the roadway and afforded a view to the swimming pool below. Quite nice.

The dining area was huge and open. Food was not the best both in lack of variety as well as freshness. I stayed with known brands of cereals and some- day old pita bread. Not much variety in the liquids selection either, a sickly sweet cordial type sugar and syrup mixture and tea or coffee.

I didn’t enjoy the breakfasts here at all. The internet lounge was the open public foyer adjacent to the front desk, and the signal was intermittent, and at times unreliable. In an effort to conserve energy, the Hotel would turn off all the hall-lights and I was caught in total darkness on two occasions, and it was a task to find your way around in the dark I have to say. Apparently it was a common thing and the locals were comfortable with it. I kept thinking about elderly travellers, or women caught in this predicament. Anyway the laundry service was reasonable, I didn’t lose any item of clothing as I did in other Hotels, and the cost was reasonable.

The Hotel is well located though, just a 2 minute walk to the centre of the famous Marrakesh marketplace, where I spent a lot of my time. All in all a reasonably comfortable stay, but standards are less than ideal, but then you get what you pay for.

Great budget hotel Oct 11, 2010
A decent enough hotel with a swimming pool and air conditioned rooms. The breakfast wasn't that great but the staff were friendly and helpful. Within walking distance of the Old and the New City and a stone's throw from the bus station. You can get a bus to the airport for 20dhm. Wouldn't recommend the taxi drivers outside the hotel, they charge a lot. If you walk out onto the main road you can pick up a taxi there. Avoid the large taxis as they charge a lot for tourists. We found Hassan, a rickshaw driver who gave us a fun filled lift from the Medina back to the hotel for much less than the cabs ask for. Try to get the cabs to put the meter on. If they do, it's around 7dhm to either Gueliz or the Medina.
