Ruths Gourmet Skagen Reviews
Great food at the top of Denmark Sep 18, 2014
The northern tip of Denmark is a big tourist destination so you will find lots of restaurants serving the many people dropping by for a week of relaxing at the beach. But one restaurant stands out as better than the rest. The legendary Ruth’s Gourmet restaurant which is located at Ruth’s Hotel which just happens to be the best hotel in this region of Denmark. The restaurant was led by the grand old man of Danish gourmet restaurants Michel Michaud for many years but just before this season he had quit the restaurant and moved to a new place. So the head chef is new and it will be interesting to investigate if the new man is maintaining the reputation of the restaurant.
You can choose between three different menus with 3, 5 or 9 course meal. The 3 course has the same starter, main and dessert as the two other menus which add a few extra courses along with the basic three. We have been eating too much the last couple of days so we decide to stick with the smallest of the three menus and not explore the full extent of the kitchen which is probably a mistake since the food is excellent.
When we head into the restaurant we are lead to a nice quite corner table which has lots of space around it so we are not disturbed by the other guest in the restaurant. The waiter is quickly coming and asking for our drink orders and then we get a few snacks. The other tables in the restaurant is also getting snacks and it turns out there is a bit of variation of the snacks to each table - I notice this since I am looking at an interesting snack served at a different table which we never get.
The most visually impressive of the snacks is a big bull horn which serves as a plate for some ham and salami. The taste is ok but I am more taken in with the presentation than the food at this point. The bull horn is followed by a couple extra snacks which are present a bit more traditionally and taste great as well.
After the snacks it is time to go for the actual meal which is pretty classic menu - a seafood starter with nice scallops with radish and cream followed by an excellent duck in berry sauce and we finish off with an ice cream. All in all the food has a high level and the fact it is a new chef doesn’t seem to have harmed the high standards of the restaurant.
A nice touch is our waiter which is an apprentice who isn’t too over worked this evening and has the time to chat so we get an impression of what he wants to do when he finish his training. He find this small village a bit too quiet and want to leave for the nearest big town when he is done with his training. He has had it with the high end dinning since he find the tempo of the work too slow paced and wants to work in a midrange restaurant where he can use his energy during the service at night.

Ruths Gourmet Sep 18, 2014
The room of the Gourmet restaurant which is located at the main hotel building is not that big – even though the restaurant is quite famous, the service was exceptional and all the staff who work there wear a suit and polish shoes and very polite and helpful. The place is very modern, compact and really clean.
Currently the gourmet restaurant run by Throsten Schmidt who were known for his Aarhus restaurants Malling & Schmidt, Nordisk Spisehus and Villa Supreme.
We were usher to our table which located near the window facing the street with a bit of view before the sun goes down, and the candle has been lit up when we arrived. The place was very cosy and comfortable.
There were good table space in between the diner so we were not interrupted with the next tables.
After seated and order drinks, the complimentary snacks arrive quickly with the information and name of each snacks. The little entry was delicious with very interesting presentation. We keeps an eye at other neighbourhood tables to make sure we did not miss any snacks and get ours properly. But we noticed we did not get a couple of snacks which serve at the front of the next table from us, and we were very curious about that food and a bit of jealousy since we would like to taste those as well. No, we did not ask the staff about the different snacks.
Anyway, since we only pre-booked for three course meals a long time ago, it was too late to change to a bigger menu, and we settle with it. When our first meal arrive – it taste delicious and we enjoy it. The whole meals has a very good presentation and tasty. I would recommend this place for all the foodie.
If you are in Skagen area, it is worth to have dinner at this restaurant even if you are not stay in the hotel. It is a quick drive from Skagen town to this place. But make sure do not drink and drive.
