Rustic Canyon Santa Monica Reviews
Nice casual restaurant, but not sure what the hype is about... Sep 21, 2008
I had been to Rustic Canyon before and while it was decent, I didn't feel compelled to return until I read several outstanding reviews in different newspapers. I invited fellow TBers (Sheila and Jen) to have dinner with me. It was a wonderful evening mainly due to the fab company, but the food again underwhelmed me. Don't get me wrong - the food is pretty good, but not spectacular. Perhaps our expectations were too high. On top of that, the restaurant was astonishingly loud. One wonders why newer restaurants still have this problem - part of designing the space is to create a appealing ambience, and having to shout at your dinner companions is never that appealing. But back to the food ... we had:
Steamed mussels with grilled bread - the reviews on this was phenomenal and while I agree the broth with the mussels was quite tasty, I felt the grilled bread overwhelmed the lovely sweet flavors of the mussels and broth.
Butternut squash ravioli - pretty good, but again not great or special. This is a pretty common dish in LA so it was easy to compare.
Cod - I think Sheila liked her cod, but I didn't taste it so can't say.
Cinnamon/Sugar doughnuts with hot chocolate - this was the hit of the night. Quite delectable - hot puffy pieces of fried dough served with the richest, most decadent chocolate.
Chocolate pudding pie - nothing to write home about. mediocre.
Not a particularly expansive or interesting wine list.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something...
I did hear that brunch at Rustic Canyon is quite good, but I'm not sure if I'll be trying it anytime soon...
