Check out the ruins of El Caracol Dec 16, 2010
Caracol, found in west-central Belize, was an ancient Mayan city that was inhabited as early as 900 BC with the most activity from 400 and 800 AD. It is not too far from the border with Guatemala and you can take day tours from San Ignacio and there are also a few hotels nearby. This large archaeological site has many tombs, pyramids, small homes some really cool Mayan art.

It is the largest Mayan site in Belize and is found within the Chiquibil Forest Reserve. This site is not as heavily cleared as others in the region, but this allows for more charismatic atmosphere in my opinion. Quite different in that respect compared to other sites I have seen in Mexico. It is easy to take a day trip over there from Belize City as well and I recommend it for anyone visiting this small, pleasant country.
