Rubens House - not a poor man's residence Sep 10, 2003
Peter Paul Rubens lived in a 16th century house here from 1616 to 1640. he carried out extensive changes himself and more were carried out after his death. By the time that it came into the possession of the city in 1937 it was badly damaged and was restored according to sketches of the late 17th century. It is said that Rubens built it up to be the height of fashion and even today it's abundantly clear that he was not one of those artists said to have lived 'in a garret.'

Paintings by Rubens in the house include the famous one of Adam and Eve and some works by contemporaries are also on display.
