A Store, and nothing more Sep 16, 2008
First of all, this 'thing to do' in Calgary is just a store. As I was browsing the 'Things to Do in Calgary,' this store was ranked 4 out of 31 of things to do. I hope informing people of it being just a store will hopefully prevent disappointment by travellers who went out of their way to see this place. So, FYI.

This store basically sells overpriced lifestyle and house decor. IMO, many things an average person does not need, or should buy. Perhaps if you want a wooden statue without travelling, this may be a good place for you, but then again, this site is a TRAVEL-oriented site.

Ranging from African wood carvings to Pachouli lotion, this store sells it. Unfortunately, not much in the store represents Calgarian, or Canadian culture for that matter. For soapstone carvings and other Native American handicrafts, check out other places run by real Natives, who sell the goods sans the extortionate markup.

On a good day, you may have a pleasant experience with friendly staff. On the wrong day, beware the dark cloud of staff arrogance that looms over this establishment.

I do not know how or why this is ranked #4.

Rubaiyat is a spectacular gallery featuring the best in North American craft. It may be a bit pricey, but for anyone that knows anything about art, the collections are handmade and support local and international ARTISTS.

As an artist, I rely on establishments like this because they value the time, imagination and dedication artists invest. Furthermore, in an oil city like Calgary, it is refreshing to have a lovely space, where you can escape from the urban environment.

It is ranked #4 because it appeals to kind people who enjoy beautiful things. The staff and owners of this remakable place should be commended for their dedication to unique and collectible items for around the world.

If you can't afford to pick up and fly to Africa to see some original tribal art, or to Seattle to enjoy spectacular art glass, then Rubaiyat is a great compromise!

I have travelled far and wide and this is one of my most treasured stops in any city. It may not be everyone's first choice, but it certainly doesn't deserve to be trashed.

Spectacular Space !!!!! Jan 22, 2009
The Rubaiyat is a stunning space filled with inspiring and unique items. Nestled amoung the diverse shops 17th avenue ( of one of Calgary's few walking friendly shopping areas), this gallery is a must. It is maze of antique oak showcases, from a time long past, filled with both modern and antique pieces.

You are greeted by a welcoming staff and surrounded by beautiful things. After walking through Calgary's bustling downtown, an hour in this calm and intriguing place was a treat. My advice, pick up a coffee at Cafe Beano first, and then......enjoy this wonderful place.

Much love to the Rubaiyat, it is a unique gem, hidden in the middle of a growing city.
