Royer's Round Top Cafe Reviews
A Cafe Worth the Drive Oct 21, 2009
In Round Top, Texas, which is located roughly halfway between Houston and Austin, there is a great cafe called Royers Round Top Cafe. A tasty, diverse selection of food is available including pasta, salmon, quail, burgers and chicken.
Located on the square in Round Top, Royers has been a Round Top institution for many years. The current owners have operated this restaurant since 1987.
Royers is especially known for its pies, which are delicious. Many options are available including apple, chocolate chip, strawberry rhubarb, butterscotch, cherry, peach, pecan and coconut. All pies are served with ice cream (there is even an extra charge on the menu if ice cream is rejected). I had the peach pie, which was wonderful. For pie fanatics who cannot decide, Royers offers a pie sampler plate with four different selections. There is even a pie of the month club for fans who would like pies shipped.
The cafe is cozy and sits no more than 15 tables. Prices for main courses range from roughly $10 to $25, while a slice of pie will run around $6.
Locals in Houston and Austin will make the drive just to visit Royers. This restaurant is often featured in guidebooks as a hidden treat. It's country cooking at its very best.
P.S. For American readers, I have just heard that CBS Sunday Morning has taped a segment about Royers which is expected to be televised the Sunday before U.S. Thanksgiving in November, 2009. The segment will be about Royers pie of the month club for life and will be hosted by Bill Geist.
