Royal Kitchen Vegetarian Cafe Negril Reviews
Nov 08, 2007
The owner of the restaurant, Errol 'Ites' Chambers, epitomizes the warmth of Jamaican hospitality. Within minutes of entering his establishment and sitting down for a chat, you feel you've made a friend for life. This great vegetarian/Ital restaurant (Rastafarians use the word Ital, derived from the word 'vital', to signify clean, pure and natural food) is surprisingly satisfying, even for a meat-eater. Errol and his staff cook up wholesome vegetarian dishes that are so hearty, you may not be able to finish it all (as was the case for us).
For a very inexpensive $250 JA (less than $4 US), we had a very generous combo plate of rice and peas (beans for us Westerners), mildly spicy soy chunks, ackee, callaloo, and cabbage, all naturally seasoned with herbs like rosemary. Though we didn't try any (forgot?), there are several fresh juices available. You can get cucumber juice, soursop (tastes like pineapple & peach) and whatever else is in season. After eating and drinking here, a person definitely walks away feeling revitalized.
Also, be sure to spend some time learning from Errol about Negril's early days as a tourist destination when the 'hippies' first discovered it in the early 70's. He has a wealth of interesting information on Negril as well as Rastafarian culture. One visit to the Royal Kitchen and you'll most likely make a point to return each time you visit Negril's cliffs.
