Great resort but not a family friendly island Mar 29, 2008
Our family of five visited for Spring Break in March 2008. The Royal Decameron was a beautiful resort and we were very pleased with the two bedroom suite we were given. We had the penthouse and a view of the whole bay. The sunsets were breath taking! The elevator only held 4 people but was really intended for one wheelchair so be ready to use the stairs for the 4 floor climb. It was updated in '04 but the inside and grounds were kept up very nicely. The groundskeepers were always busy trimming and sweeping. The food was a bit different at times serving goat and kidney pie but there was variety for everyone. My kids surely didn't go hungry. There was a beach side snack shack that served pizza, burgers, hotdogs, and wings during the day. For dinner we made reservations at the restaurant that had steaks, lamb, fish, and such. The buffet was always open for B, L, and dinner. The bars are always serving and the blenders are always blending!!

The activity board is filled with fun things the activity people organize. They have sea bikes, canoes, a sailboat, snorkle equipment and lots of other fun things you can check out. This is a beach front resort so you can snorkle right there and see some amazing fish. There are two smallish pools, a hot tub, seaside lounge mats, cabanas, a sea trampoline, three piers, and two small beaches.

We had a great time but unfortunately we won't be going back. The whole island is covered in a culture of drugs. It is everywhere you look. It was offered to my 15 year old child; he was also offered a bong and alcohol to buy. The only place we could get away from it was on the resort. There is also a lot of crime. We saw someone have a walet taken right out of their back pocket from a person in a moving car.

Too bad you wrote about things that happened outside the resort hotel and small strip. There are many places that are poor in Jamiaca...where alcohol and drugs abound...like in all the other cities in the U.S., Canada or Europe...however, at this resort one can just holiday and have safe fun.
What you spoke about was not the resort, but the other parts of Jamaica which is still a very poor and undeveloped country.
In relation to your last paragraph, tell me a country where you have been or will go, and I will show you a similar place that you described in your last paragraph...
Anyway...different strokes...

Two world travellers...me over 60 and my daughter early 40's..had a tremendous time at this classy but not opulant place. There is everything there for families, singles and couples, and what is not there is easily, carefully and safely accessed through the tour guide. Food, service and entertainment make this place...and of course the view and being right on the beach with easy access to scuba, snorkling, kayaking, glass bottom boat for viewing reefs, small cat for short sails, pool, regge heartbeat, dancing there and close to two hot clubs, great entertainment...local musicians play for lunches and dinners...stage bands and professional dancers perform as well as the local hotel staff performers who make sure everyone is having fun...
Satisfying and very impressive place for the price...feels like 5 stars while you are there...

The Royal Decameron Beach Hotel Montego Bay is an all-inclusive beach resort. It is a relatively small and older resort hotel but very clean and well-maintained by their friendly staff.

Located less than 5 minutes from Montego Bay Airport and a 10-minute walk to MOntego Bay's Hip Strip, Royal Decameron Beach Hotel Montego Bay is a great place to stay in Montego Bay if you want an affordable, clean, well-located beach hotel.

On one side is a long, two-story building where our rooms are located. The central part of the resort is where the club, restaurant, jacuzzi, stage, main dining hall, outdoor and indoor bar, and reception are located. On the other end is a 5-story building connected with the reception hall. A heated pool, another regular pool with a swim bar, lounging area with shades, and volleyball is also located on this side. There are 2 areas where a small stretch of sand is available with beach lounges and the small stretches of sand was sufficient.

Our room and bathroom was very spacious! They clean your room everyday, unless you place the sign "Do Not Disturb". Almost all of the rooms have beach view, and because it is located close to the hotel, you can also see planes as they approach landing. It's quite a view to see those planes so close to the water!

There is only one restaurant in the resort where you are required to make a reservation, and the main dining hall where everything is buffet-style. The food is mediocre - typical of all-inclusive, but still delicious. Take this chance to venture out for better food and take advantage of the close proximity of the hotel to the Hip Strip. Try the very touristy and pricey Margaritaville (one of 4 in Jamaica) or the Pork Pit for Jamaica's famous jerk pork which I highly recommend! The drinks are okay - stick to the frozen drinks, and anything with rum is served with Jamaica's very own Appleton Rum.

The resort is fenced in from the public with a security patrolling all night.
The resort also as its own travel agency where you can book sightseeing activities.
