Royal Crescent Hotel Bath Reviews
Refined elegance of old times Jul 15, 2009
Oh my.. We arrived in Bath totally exhausted and we were fed up with driving around, searching for a hotel. We set the navigation system on the nearest hotel and ended up in the beautiful Crescent were the Royal Crescent Hotel is located. My husband was actually saying: "I don't care what it costs, I need some rest." He really, really shouldn't have said that!
The reception desk was tucked away in a little room where no more than two customers could enter. Really strange! But the young woman found us two rooms very quickly. The price was £ 250 per night per room. That would be £ 500 for just one night? Enormous. But my husband stuck to his words and we decided we could stay here just the one night, if we moved the next day to a hotel more suitable to our budget and just enjoyed the surroundings. On my request if a discount was possible, the receptionist upgraded our classic room to a deluxe room (no. 1).
The valet parking was included, the concierge helped us with our suitcases and explained the car would be parked somewhere in Bath, on the street. Therefore we had to take all of our belongings out of the car. Also, if we needed the car, it could take up to 15 minutes to get the car for us.
All of the hotel is classical decorated, with taste. The garden is a delight and leads to the other buildings (pavilon, restaurant and garden villa and spa). Our deluxe room was actually situated in the basement in the main building, right under the reception area. WiFi was free and worked like a charm in our room, but not in our daughters room across the garden in the Pavilion. The drawing room and the bedroom both had a tiny 22" samsung television. The amount of closet space was enormous. It was too hot to ask for the concierge to burn the fireplace, but it was lovely to have one in our room.
The back door in the drawing room led to a patio, walled off at the garden. Standing in the garden, you could look down into our little appartment. Our daughter occupied a classic room on the second floor in the Pavilion (a converted coach house) on the other side of the garden. The classic room was very small and I felt it would feel crowded if you slept there with two. As said, the Wifi in her room didn't work, nor did the television. Because we were only staying the one night, we didn't mention this at the reception desk.
The garden of the hotel is beautiful, you walk through it if you want to visit the spa or the restaurant. We didn't eat in the restaurant.
Breakfast was wonderful, with cereals, toast and the possiblity to order cooked or fried eggs on the side. The location of the hotel, at the Crescent is great if you want to explore Bath. Everything we wanted to visit was in walking distance, from the Roman Bath to the Jane Austen Centre and the Cinema. In front of the hotel is a big lawn and since the hotel is on top of a hill you look down on Bath and the public city park.
Checking out went smooth, the concierge had the car ready for us in five minutes and helped loading the suitcases. I'd really love to stay here again if possible. You feel special in this hotel, because of the location, the decoration, the atmosphere and the garden. A charm!
