Beware crowds! Dec 20, 2002
I think this former monastery is possibly the most interesting place in the island of Malorca. As soon as you get off the bus it is 'in your face.' The bus ride from Soler is itself pretty fabulous, skirting cliffs too savage to be easily ruined b too much development.

The building looks as if it means a lot of stairs but I asked, I believed and t was right. Most you want to see is on the ground floor. This includes an old pharmacy - delightful - and cells 2 and 4 where Chopin and george Sands spent a winter in the 1830s. Sands's book, which is harshly critical of the island, is widely available in Mallorcan bookshops.

The entry ticket also allowed me to go into a palatial building round the corner (reference to which I have sought unsuccessfully in Google.) Not only is it interesting - there are regular recitals of Chopin piano works. Somewhat to my embarasment nobody else came in and I had my own private recital - a unique experience for me!
