The worst hotel ever!! Jan 10, 2011
Prior to moving to Brighton, I visted and stayed at a hotel to vet tge area before commiting to the move.

First off, I am a strong believer that, in this life, 'you get what you pay for'. With that in mind, I wasn't expecting a great deal from this hotel. I mean, the whole reason for going to Brighton for the weekend was so I could look around, see what Brighton had to offer and display my incredible skills on the soft-toy-grabbing-machines on the palace peir.

If you're interested, the final result was Me 2 : Grabby-machines 0 (Hello Kitty and Alexander the meerkat). You're not interested. I digress.

Anyway, the hotel. It's rubbish. Like really quite rubbish. It is cheap though, so if you just want somewhere to crash after a night out in Brighton(and don't have faith in your ability to get lucky), it's an option to consider. If this is the case however I would stay grab yourself one of the many hostels in brighton as they are cheap enough and would most likely offer much more entertainment So, pros and cons:

- The room was a decent enough size

- The bed could have been worse

- It's bang opposite the pier and decently placed for the Lanes

- It's cheap

- It's cheap

- Everything

I really can't impress upon you firmly enough, dear reader, that virtually everything about this hotel is reminiscent of one of Dante's circles. From the building site lobby, staffed with illiterate morons, to the very suspicious stains you can find on carpets and walls throughout the building. The corridors are 'heavily air-freshened', which not only assaults the eyes and throat, it leaves you with a sense of dread that, Jesus, if they feel the need to pump that much in, what on earth kind of smell are they covering up? The bar, ha, really. It's dreadful. The sofas are scuffed to buggery, the staff are grouchy. The only reason to dare venture in is if you are lucky enough to have signed up for the 'free' bottle of wine deal that dragged me into this establishment.

The room. Decent size. Painted shut window. No ventilation. Temperature veered from 'icy' to 'tropic' seemingly at random throughout the night. TV and Remote that worked independently, but somehow developed some kind of electronic autism when operated at the same time. No lampshades on bed-mounted lights. Always a nice touch that. REALLY suspicious stain on the bedroom floor. I'm not naive, I have a fair idea what it was. Shame on you. I genuinely would not have been surprised if I'd found a rat chewing on a used hyperdermic needle hiding under the bed.

Also, I am a singular fan of the sign saying 'BEWARE OF THE STAIRS'. Like they hold some sinister, hidden danger. It is altogether likely that they might.

There's so much more I could say. Oh, the food. I should comment on that. For the love of all that is good in this world, please do not even contemplate eating dinner here. It was free for us, as part of the deal, but frankly I felt that was still far too high a price. Swill, slop, unpleasant - these are all words that I'd use to describe the fayre on offer here did they not seem insufficient.

So the question 'would I recommend this hotel to a friend?'. Well, no. I probably wouldn't even recommend it to someone who got on my nerves.

So then, I've stayed here now for PCS annual conferences since 2006 and can honestly say it hasn't changed much. Situated on the round-a-bout right next to Brighton Pier it's in an excellent location for food, beer and family fun. Only a ten minute walk from the station, head downhill towards the sea and you can't miss it!

The rooms are ok, but haven't really been upgraded much in the last few years. This year I got a lovely sea view with a spacious room big enough for a coffee table and couple of chairs next to the window. If you're lucky you might even get one of the jacuzzi's. One thing to watch is the spiders - it gets warm and there are little ones about, but not something that would put me off cos we get them at home in the summer!

Breakfast is really nice - buffet with something for everyone - including porrige :) Bar snacks are good value for money too, but can't comment on evening meals because we always ate out. It's close to the lanes where there's all different types of restaurants and around the corner is a kebab house that opens til the early hours and a 24hour off licence.

Suitable for those with walking difficulties as there's a lift to all floors, but you should warn them in advance because some floors do have a couple of steps and a couple of the corridors are a bit narrow - but there are accessible rooms with disabled bathrooms. And if you ask, it's one of few hotels in Brighton that offer smoking rooms - some with balconies!

Cheap & cheerful, it's not the Ritz, but it's a good base and reasonable in price for a family holiday in Brighton.

Nice hotel on Brighton beach, across from the Pier. If you've ever stayed here, the weekends are crazy packed, so booking online is your only option. Rooms are very outdated (I think telly was from the 70's), no air conditioning or fans, probably not great in the summer, but the breeze from my open window was heavenly! Bed was uncomfortable, but not as bad as others. Reasonable prices for supper, breakfast buffet included with room. Internet only in lobby, but plenty of room to lounge downstairs. Bus stops just behind the Royal Albion, short ride to train station.
