Amazing birds Jul 21, 2011
I stopped by the Royal Albatross Colony while I was living on the Otago Peninsula one weekend in June. I was interested in seeing the chicks, which were still nesting at the colony.

Sometimes you can see adult albatrosses flying over the parking lot on their way to the colony, in which there is a tour up to the observation deck. The tour costs money, but it can be worth it to see the breeding colony if there are chicks around. Be sure to ask if you will see chicks on the tour. The center has a live cam, but that doesn't show you the area that is open to the tours. The center also has a great informational museum about Otago Wildlife, which is free.

The day that I went, I saw five chicks sitting on their nests. The adults were out foraging for food, but I saw a few fly over the colony. The chicks were very fluffy and were just starting to get their adults feathers. For the most part, they just sat around on the nests. According to the rangers, the chicks will start to exercise in order to lose weight before fledgling in September.

I really enjoyed seeing the albatross chicks, but the cost ($40) of the tour was a little steep for an hour of viewing time. Basically, you watch a 10 minute video at the start of the 'tour' and then one of the rangers takes you up to the viewing shelter. Once there, binoculars are available and you to watch the birds for the duration of the tour. So for some people, this would be very boring. If you an avid bird watcher, I would recommend taking the tour.

This colony in Dunedin is unique because it is the only place in the world where these magnificant birds nest near a major city.

You can go on a guided tour or on your own up the hill to the viewing shed and see these birds and their chics up close.

The Albatross centre is the base where the tour starts and is filled with interesting information about the Albatross and the surrounding area.
