August 7Leaving from Kuusamo driving with Laura and her father to Rovaniemi where I will start my HH journey to the north. I woke up pretty well in the morning in Kuusamo and prepared do some more stuff on the net and then with Laura I went to the Lidl to get some more grocery for the journey either for camping and for expensive Norway where I will try to spend as least possible. Laura's father had also prepare to give me a plastic blanket to eventually cover my new tent in case of rain to be…

I had nothing planned when I landed in Helsinki, so I started to take trains and travel the most I could. I went from Helsinki to Porvoo, later to Turku, and then to Tampere. I returned to Helsinki to take a flight to Rovaniemi to explore the North Pole just for a few days. Great experience in a very chilly place but with the most incredible people I had ever met. Finnish are a very hospitable people.

9:00 amMeh. This midnight sun thing sucks. The sun was out at midnight, and 2, and 4, and now....ugh. Didn't sleep a wink. Yesterday we went to the Arctic Circle, Santa Park, and a great restaurant called Rosso. Yes, Santa Park and Santa's Village were kind of hokey (for a group of adults), but it was still fun and charming. They had a little dancing elf show, some fun kiddie things to do, and an ice bar. It made us feel like we were little kids again, until of course we went to the ice bar a…

We left at 9:30 am. Here in Finland there are a lot of mosquitoes! I have never seen so many. We went to Rovaniemi to see Santa Claus. This was not really the time for it. There was a Santa Claus village, but it was too commercial for us and so little people, not cosy at all. The Santa Claus Park will open in November, so we couldn't go there too. We went to take a walk nearby the Santa Claus Park and had a nice view over the city.

Setting off from Hong Kong in Aug 1992, 2 days after turning 22, I traveled China, Mongolia, Russia, Scandinavia, the Baltics, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, returning to Hong Kong in July 1993. Apart from Athens/Cairo, I never set foot on an airplane during this year-long walkabout. Before the days of digital cameras, internet, and mobile phones, this solo adventure was as much a discovery of myself as it was about these 31 countries. Many of them, like me, have long since changed.
