An original circular Romanesque church Jul 14, 2011
To the right of the Torre dell'Orologio close to the Piazza delle Erbe, but on a lower level, stands the oldest church of Mantua, built around 1100 and dedicated to St Lawrence,a Roman martyr of the third century.

Closed in the 16th century by the Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga, partially torn down, its dome demolished,it was partially hidden by domestic buildings.Fortunately at the beginning of the 20th century, the Commune of Mantua expropriated the houses around and the structure still intact was brought back to light, the missing parts being rebuilt in a neo-Romanesque interpretation.

It has a circular plan, entirely built up of brick work with three vaults and a women gallery upstairs. The lower gallery

bears traces of frescoes and in the apse, you may see a fragment of a fresco reproducing St Lawrence on the fire.It offers an odd ambience...

entrance free!
