Rostov-na-Donu (also known as Rostov-on-Don) is a big city situated on the right bank of the Don River. Rostov is the administrative centre of Rostov region and also the centre of Southern Federal District of Russia.
Rostov-on-Don is located about 1000 km from Moscow, 46 km from the Azov Sea and about 300 km to the Black Sea.
Rostov-na-Donu was founded on 1749 as a customs and a fortress. Later it became a big city of merchants. And got such names as "The Gates to the Caucasus" and "A Port of Five Seas".
There are a few places which can be interesting for tourists in the city, but what is the most important - Rostov region is famous for Don Cossacs culture. There are some places not so far from Rostov which should be visited in certain way - Starocherkassk (which was a capital of Don Cossacs), Taganrog (which was the first Russian Navy base, founded by Peter I The Great, also the native place of famous russian writer A.Chekhov), Tanais (ruins of ancient Greek city, Azov (which was a fortress of Ottoman Empire in XV century) and Veshenskaya (which is known as Cossacs Stanitsa and the region of famour russian writer M.Sholokhov).
