Simple and beautiful Apr 05, 2012
This castle is set right in the Killarney National Park, so it's free ( at least we didn't pay anything ) and is right in the middle of beautiful scenery, and right on Lough Leane Lake, one of the lakes of Killarney.

It's a very simple castle not too captivating but that's part of why i liked it, it was easy to see people lived in it, without it being outrageously big. Putting yourself back in time when walking around, to me, makes spots like this some of the coolest sights to be seen, as beautiful as it was now, i can only imagine how grand it must've seen and how even more beautiful the area would've been.

The was good sized, too, with ducks and swans flying and swimming around, another part that i really liked since i hadn't seen much wildlife up until this point ( or after it really ).

To me, if you're going to be in Killarney, you take the short drive from the city center ( maybe a 10 minute drive ) to check the place out, you can't go wrong with it!

It was built sometime in the 15th century.

Built circa 1420 this castle has been restored. We arrived at dusk and roamed the grounds, which was free. This was by far one of the eeriest places I have ever been. My friend and I set off in opposite directions after taking a few (blurry) pics- I swear my camera worked just fine everywhere else. I do not recommend walking alone on the grounds of Ross Castle at dusk! It was creepy and at one point it felt like someone was behind me breathing down my neck. I promptly went running to find my friend, who had experience the exact same sensation from the other side of the castle and was running towards me. We both literally ran back to the car, hearts beating, screams stuck in our throats.

We went back the next day in the daylight to take a tour of the inside and felt none of the eerieness from the night before, so either we are both super impressionable or there really is something otherworldly about the place. I read a few weeks after I got back from Ireland that Ross Castle is reportedly haunted. I agree!
