 Waterfalls, sancoche, and very pretty fabric Jan 22, 2008
Dominica is, by far, the most naturally beautiful place I have ever been. I didn't really even get into the "heart" of the jungles, but was it ever beautiful. I hope to go back simply because we took a tour that was a "taste" of Dominica. I'd like to spend more time off the beaten track instead of small stops at many places where many people were.
Although it's packed with tourists and quite busy, go to Trafalgar Falls. Find the sign that says "Proceed beyond this point at your own risk" and by all means proceed beyond that point. The town of Roseau is bustling. There are some typical tourist stands with typical Caribbean tourist trinkets, a duty-free store, and some local restaurants, but not much for a one-day stopper to do actually in the town. Catch one of the MANY taxi drivers, negotiate a price, and find the beautiful, unspoiled areas of this breathtaking island. There's so much more I want to see. Mom and Dad had booked a whale-watching excursion before we left on this vacation so they went their own way. Dan, Mike and I didn’t really have much in mind. I was up at 6 a.m. getting our tender tickets. Dominica was our only t…Dominica was our only tender port THANK GOODNESS because tendering isn’t the most fun thing ever. You sit around and wait for your ticket to be called. Now, if you’re a late sleeper and a long breakfast-eater, tendering is fine… Trafalgar Falls, Sancoche, and one of the the best taxi drivers ever! |

What can I say that hasn't been said a thousand times before - Dominica diving is absolutely stellar. Go now! The dive boat departs (almost on time) in the morning for a two-tank dive to Witch's Point and Gurnard-Something-I-Can't-Remember. The boat is a little crowded, but no complaints - it's a nice, big boat and the staff is on the ball. The divers on bo…Dominica. But then I remember the first dives of a new location always seems to be a disappointment. We hope for better tomorrow. Back on dry land, we stroll into town for a treat at the local Starbucks knockoff, Rituals Coffee. I just might write… Diving Dominica...at last! |
