Roommates Penang Reviews
Character Galore Dec 11, 2012
We loved this hostel! We had it recommended to us by someone else who had been to Penang and we didn't reget our decision to stay here. The guy who works there, Yen, is meant to be exceedingly friendly and helpful but unfortunately he was in New Guinea when we were there. But, regardless, the staff were all friendly and nice.
There are only two 8-bed dorms here. The beds are good enough, they are all covered with curtains on all sides giving you privacy. If they weren't the sun would wake you up quite early as there are no window curtains. We didn't find the air-con in the rooms cold enough. It only goes on between 10pm and 7am.
The hostel has plenty of character with hand-written and painted signs around the common room. There is a collection jar on the reception urging 'roommates' (hostel-stayers) to donate to get the two hostel dogs, who were abandoned on their doorstep as pups, spayed/neutered so they don't have puppies. A very worthy cause, we reckoned, as we had the pleasure of meeting Shanty the dog on our last night. She was so lovely and tame.
It is a great place to meet people and is located in a good place, off Chulia Street. The bus to the north of the island, around the National Park leaves from just around the corner.
I highly recommend this hostel.
