Roma Revolving Restaurant Durban Reviews
Great views, average food Jul 05, 2010
Roma Revolving Restaurant is located on the 32nd floor of one of the taller buildings in downtown Durban. It is in an area that you normally wouldn't hang around in at night, but if you park in the lot in the front of the building off of Victoria Embankment, you should be fine. There is a security guard there who watches over the lot.
The restaurant itself is decorated in an upscale, fancy yet harmlessly tacky Italian decor. Iconic Roman-ish statues and murals greet you as soon as you walk out of the elevator. Everything is very professional, and every table is set perfectly against the large windows that form the outside wall of the restaurant. Because of the unusual layout of the place, there aren't too many tables, so reservations are your best bet.
The food isn't overly expensive - I paid R80 (just over $10) for a good sized entree (Chicken Pizzaioli). That price is a little bit more than what you'd pay at other restaurants, but not by much. My dish was good but not awesome, and the more standard Italian fare (lasagna, pasta)that my friends ordered were well liked. One friend ordered a steak medium rare, and it came out well done and tasteless. She preferred to call the place "Roma Revolting". She was much happier with her desert. Actually, all the deserts on the tray looked pretty amazing. I had the Creme Caramel, and it was delicious.
If in Durban, it's worth going to this place for the view and the ambiance. Expect to not get off cheap, and stick to the standard Italian fare. I don't think I would make this a regular spot of mine, but it was a good experience for most in the group.
