The Red Clay of the French Open Sep 06, 2009
A visit to Roland Garros is probably not a typical stop for the Paris visitor. But, I have always been fascinated when watching the French Open played on the red clay at Roland Garros. It always strikes me as the most unique playing surface for tennis. Not that I'd know having never really played tennis myself.

I had also taken a tour of Wimbledon a few days before, and that tour went on forever. This tour was shorter and much more succinct. Perhaps they weren't so completely enamored with their own history the way the All England Club is.

We got a brief history of some French tennis, including some talk of Rene Lacoste, now famous for the clothing line carrying his name. Then we walked and saw a few outdoor courts before heading through the lockerrooms and media center before getting out to Center Court, or Phillipe Chatrier Court.

I enjoyed the tour, but I think you have to really be a tennis fan to get the full experience.
