The city of Rockwall (located in Rockwall county) has the distinction of being located in the smallest county in Texas but one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. In 1980 Rockwall had a population of 5939 but now has well over 25,000 residents. The history behind Rockwall's name is filled with great speculation. While trying to dig water wells in 1851, settlers discovered an underground rock wall. Because of its man-made appearance, there has been much discussion about how the wall came into existence. Settlers believed it was a man-made barrier defining territory. Geologists believe it is the result of weather sand dikes formed along the Balcones Fault line. At the County Courthouse on the center of town there is still a small slab of the wall for visitors to see. The city is located just 20 miles outside of the Dallas metroplex on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard.
