Climb Araps at Easter! Mar 11, 2008
So many climbs in the one location!!! I love this place!! It is certainly worth the drive (about 5 hours from Melbourne). There are climbs for all levels of experience!

Araps gets very, very, very busy over the easter weekend so you might have to wait for climbs - but the atmosphere is fantastic - Especially back at the camping grounds which is usually packed out.

The Nyatimuk pub down the road puts on a fantastic easter spit roast pig meal - very yummmy!

The campsite is good and has a toilet block - I couldn't find any showers however. I think you can only have camp fires at certain times of the year.

If you are a climber Araps should be at the top of your list for things to do in VIctoria

I agree with Skippyed, the mecca for climbing is Mt Arapapilies in Western Victoria, but it is a four to five hour drive from the city. Next door and slighly closer are the Grampians which is another great place to climb especially he Northern Grampians around Mt Stapylton and Mt Difficult. The is a great book published on the area by Simon Mentz and Glenn Tempest called Grampians Selected climbs. If you are staying in the Melbourne CBD all of our outdoor stores are clustered in Little Bourke Street near Hardware Lane. That book would be available in those stores as would advice on climbing destinations. If time is an issue there is some Great Climbing available in the Brisbane Ranges just west of Melbourne which is only about an hours drive from the city.

To the west of Melbourne is one of the best rock climbing places in the country - Mt Arapiles is the rock climbers mecca. These websites should give you some useful information:

tashy412 says: This is a cute little lane called Degraves Street in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. It's packed with tiny little cafes, with the best coffee found in Australia (who makes coffee better than the italians?). It's average priced if you want to sit down and have something to eat or drink, but it's a...
niki1013 says: This is a great climbing center!!! The staff are very friendly and helpful and the climbs change regularly. You will need to take a 10 minute induction class on your first visit. The centre can get quite busy, especially when scouts and other large groups take up many of the easier climbs. Perhaps c...
