Roatan is a beautiful island just off the Caribbean coast of Honduras. It is part of the department of Honduras called the Bay Islands (Islas de la Bahia), together with sister islands Utila and Guanaja, and commonly referred to as 'the jewel of Honduras'.
The island has changed hands many times, it has been ruled over the centuries by Spanish, English and Pirates. Captain Henry Morgan made his base at Port Royal in the mid-17th century when he and around 5,000 other pirates lived on Roatan. The island population is a real mix, the Garifuna tribe has been on the island the longest they were forced onto the island after losing a war with the British. The people of Roatan mainly speak English or creole as they were under British control for the longest time; though many are Hispanics from the mainland and are bi-lingual. Canadians, Americans and Dutch residents make up about 35% of the local population. A lush, hilly island that boasts white sand beaches, a reef system that is part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world, and living costs far lower than most of the Caribbean, to many travellers, Roatan is paradise found. Once a secret that only divers were aware of, the island is getting much more well-known, and is a port of call for several cruiseships.

I woke up early so I could get another day of snorkeling in. It was well worth it. The area right off of our own beach at Luna was full of life. After about a 1/2 hour I had to head back to the house so we could return our scooters. On the way back from dropping of the scooters we did a few last minute souvenirs shopping and finally found the burrito lady.
Mario took us on another scary ride to the airport (beer bottle in hand). We spent 2 1/2 hours getting through customs this time (...

One of the most intriguing aspects of this cruise, besides the fact that it was leaving from Galveston and we could drive to it from my mothers house, was that it was visiting Roatan, a beautiful island off the coast of mainland Honduras. I had not yet been to Central America and I was eager to visit. I had done some preliminary research and read about the island so I knew it was surrounded entirely by coral reef, it had some amazing beaches with crystal clear waters, the scuba and snorkeling...

OK. So I have the dates wrong. I will have to go back and change everything now. We spent a fantastic 3 nights in Roatan (and that was about a week ago now - so my dates all need fixing ........I guess that is what happens when you dont keep up with your diary/travel blog).
Carribean beaches, white sand,
snorkelling, SCUBA Diving, lazing on the beach, cocktails and great food. I will come back this way one day...............possibly some 'barefoot' yac...

Life in the tropics. Sometimes it seems that there is a constant battle against nature penetrating into our home. In Roatan, we have a zillion types of bugs. The sandflies, or no-see-ums, that Roatan is known for is just one small part of the insect realm that thrives here. Of course, there are the blood-sucking mosquitoes. Then we have ants. Ants, in every size and variety. We have the very miniscule ants that sometimes appear around water and juice droplets, as if out of thin air, and then ...
